What Is Basal Cell Carcinoma?
Dr. Adam Aldahan and his dermatology team at Palm Beach Dermatology in Boca Raton, FL understand that skin changes, especially conditions like basal cell carcinoma (BCC), can feel overwhelming. BCC is a common type of skin cancer that starts in the basal cells of the epidermis, the skin's outer layer. It often appears on sun-exposed areas of the body, like the face, neck, and hands. While it grows slowly and is unlikely to spread to other parts of the body, untreated BCC can damage surrounding tissues. Individuals with weakened immune systems may also be more susceptible to developing BCC. Unlike other cancers, BCC usually stays localized with stages based on tumor size, depth, and spread. Early detection and treatment are essential to prevent further damage. If you're worried about skin cancer or need more information about a BCC diagnosis, schedule a consultation with our team for a skin cancer examination.
What Is the Most Common Treatment for Basal Cell Carcinoma Removal?
The most common treatment for basal cell skin cancer is surgical removal, often done through Mohs surgery. Dermatologists consider this procedure the gold standard for BCC removal because it has the highest cure rate. It involves removing thin layers of cancerous tissue one at a time, checking each layer of the skin under a microscope until no cancer cells remain while preserving as much healthy skin as possible. Other treatment options include excisional surgery, where the surgeon cuts out the tumor and some surrounding healthy tissue, and curettage and electrodesiccation, where they scrape away the tumor and apply heat or electricity to destroy any remaining cancer cells. For smaller or superficial cases, our team may recommend topical treatments, like medicated creams or photodynamic therapy.
What Are the Signs of Basal Cell Carcinoma?
Basal cell carcinoma often appears as a sore or skin growth that doesn't heal and may get worse over time. Although it usually grows slowly, untreated basal cell carcinoma can spread deeper into the skin and nearby tissues. It often starts with small changes in the skin that might seem harmless. For our patients at Palm Beach Dermatology, recognizing these early warning signs is important for getting treatment in time. Here are common signs of basal cell carcinoma to look out for:
- A shiny, pearly bump or nodule that may be flesh-colored, pink, or red
- A persistent sore that bleeds, crusts, or doesn't heal
- A flat, scaly patch with a raised edge, often resembling a scar
- A reddish patch or irritated area that may itch or feel tender
- A bump or growth with visible blood vessels or a central indentation
